Welcome to Word of the Day on GospelBells Radio. Today, the word under the spotlight is, “Kenosis.”
(Continue reading or listen as presented on the radio by Dewunmi Afolabi-Ajani)
Kenosis is a theological word from the Greek kenoō, meaning “to empty.” It refers to the self-emptying of Jesus Christ when He took on human form and humbled Himself for our salvation.
Philippians 2:6–7 says of Jesus: “Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped; rather, He made Himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” That is kenosis—Christ laying aside His glory, not His divinity, but the privileges of it, so He could save us.

Follow us on XThis act of self-emptying is not weakness but supreme love. 2 Corinthians 8:9 declares: “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich.” In kenosis, Jesus shows us the heart of God—love that stoops low to lift us up.
And kenosis is also a model for us. Just as Christ emptied Himself, so we are called to empty ourselves of pride and self-importance, taking up the posture of humility and service. In a world that exalts self, kenosis calls us to exalt Christ.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for Your kenosis—emptying Yourself so I could be filled with life. Teach me to walk in humility and serve others with the same mind that was in You. Amen.
Now, let’s put this word into action. Can you make a Christian-themed sentence with the word, “Kenosis?” Here’s mine: “Christ’s kenosis is my model for living humbly and serving joyfully.” Now, make your own Christian-themed sentence with the word, Kenosis in the comments section. We’ll be looking out for it! Thank you for listening. I’m Dewunmi Afolabi-Ajani, wishing you a day filled with the humble joy of Christ.
