How the Story of a Drowning Man Powerfully Illustrate the Gospel

Welcome to the Did You Know? Series on GospelBells Radio. Did you know that the story of a drowning man can powerfully illustrate the gospel?

(Continue reading or listen as presented on the radio by Adetutu Awonuga)

Picture this: A man is thrashing about in deep water, clearly drowning. Just when it seems he has no hope, someone throws him a life preserver. But instead of reaching out and grabbing it, he waves it away and keeps trying to swim harder on his own. His strength soon fails, and he sinks beneath the waves.

This is exactly what happens when people try to save themselves by their own effort. The Bible says in Ephesians 2:8–9: “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

Salvation is God’s life preserver, thrown to us through the cross of Jesus Christ. It is not about how strong we can swim, how hard we can work, or how good we can try to be. All our effort, apart from Christ, will eventually fail. What saves us is taking hold of the gift God offers—trusting in Jesus, and Jesus alone.

So the next time you hear about a drowning rescue, remember this truth: your greatest rescue has already been offered. Don’t refuse the lifeline. Take hold of Christ by faith, and you will live.

These simple pictures remind us of a profound reality: Christ saves—completely, and only Him.

Thank you for listening. I’m Adetutu Awonuga, wishing you a day anchored in the saving grace of Jesus.
