Subversive means seeking to overthrow, undermine, or quietly work against established authority. In the world, subversion often carries a negative sense—plots, rebellion, or hidden agendas that destroy trust and order

Scripture warns against this destructive spirit. Proverbs 6:16, 19 lists things the Lord hates, including “a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.” Subversive behavior in this sense tears down, sows division, and resists God-given order.

But there is also a holy kind of subversion. The early Christians were called “those who have turned the world upside down” (Acts 17:6). By preaching Christ crucified and risen, they quietly but powerfully undermined sin, idolatry, and injustice. While worldly subversion destroys, gospel subversion liberates—it breaks the chains of sin and reveals the kingdom of God.

So the call for us is this: reject subversive attitudes that harm unity in Christ’s body, but embrace holy boldness that subverts the lies of Satan with the truth of Scripture and the love of Christ.

Prayer:
Lord, keep me from any subversive spirit that tears down Your church. Instead, fill me with courage to live in a way that subverts sin and darkness, and shines the light of Christ. Amen.
