FAITH AND FAITHFUL LIVING

The two most important elements of the Christian life are faith and faithful living. To understand these rightly is to be well advanced in true Christian experience, because they are essential. You will never find genuine faith without godliness, and you will never find real holiness without faith rooted in the righteousness of Christ.

Woe to those who try to separate them! Some focus on faith but ignore holiness—they may hold to sound doctrine, but they live in sin, and so condemn themselves by holding the truth in unrighteousness. Others pursue outward holiness but deny the faith—like the Pharisees of old, who looked righteous outwardly but were full of corruption within.

Faith is the foundation. Holiness is the building that rests upon it. A bare foundation is of little use in a storm; a man needs both a solid foundation and a house for shelter. So too, a holy life without faith is like a house with no foundation—unstable and unsafe. But put faith and holy living together, and they form a strong, lasting structure.
