I do not know what the times are for you presently. But I do know that our days, our work, our commitments, our sacrifices, even our frustrations would become more meaningful and bearable if we could hear the voice of God talking directly to us and our circumstances.

This hymn writer says: In times like these, you need the Bible….and, oh yes, that’s true.

The longest chapter in the Book of the Psalms is also the longest chapter in the whole of the Bible and guess what it does? It is devoted to a celebration of the invaluable blessings of studying and abiding by the word of God.

The Bible is not a book of helpful hints; it is God’s authoritative word. Psalm 119 says it contains God’s ways, God’s law, God’s precepts, God’s testimonies, and God’s judgements.

In times such as the time you are passing through now, you need the Bible.

The Bible is God’s reliable word; it does not change with the times. Verse 89 says forever, O lord, Thy word is settled in heaven. You need a reliable source of God’s direction, look to the Bible.

You also need God’s powerful voice to speak into your affairs? Look to the Bible and you will hear that voice. In verse 50, the Psalmist said: In my affliction, Your word has quickened me.

Are you confused and desperately in need of guidance? Hear the testimony of one who discovered the blessing of God’s word. The psalmist in verse 105 of chapter 119 said: Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.

O, how our pathways light up with great brightness when we hear God’s voice in the Bible.

In times like these you need the Bible,
In times like these, O be not idle;
Be very sure, be very sure,
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

Yes, in times such as the one you are right now, you need the Bible and please be not idle. Study, meditate and fall in love with the Bible. In the sacred pages of the Bible, you will hear God’s voice comforting you and counselling you, saying, go this way.

Let us pray.

Dear Father, we thank You for the gift of Your word manifested in our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and codified in the Bible. Please teach us to love Your word and in all times and seasons, please lead us to search Your word and therein to hear your voice of power, your voice of comfort and Your voice of wisdom. We ask in faith and in the name of our Lord and our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.
