When reading the New Testament, you may notice Paul sometimes shines light on important truths with these words: “This is a faithful saying.”
It’s his way of saying, “This is trustworthy. Don’t miss this. Don’t forget it. Build your life on it.”
Paul uses this phrase five times in his letters to Timothy and Titus. Each one captures a core truth of the Christian faith. Let’s walk through them—and see why they matter for us today.
1. Christ came to save sinners (1 Timothy 1:15)
“This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.”
The gospel in one line: Jesus came to save sinners. Paul, once a persecutor, calls himself “chief,” reminding us that no one is beyond God’s reach.
Why it matters for you: No past is too dark for Christ’s mercy. If Paul could be forgiven, so can you.
2. Church leadership is noble work (1 Timothy 3:1)
“This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the office of a bishop, he desires a good work.”
Paul highlights that leadership in God’s house is a good, honorable calling—not about status, but about service.
Why it matters for you: Leading or supporting leaders in God’s church is worth aspiring to—it’s a sacred responsibility, not a burden.

“For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things… This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance.”
Spiritual training outlasts physical fitness. Godliness benefits us in this life and the next.
Why it matters for you: Time spent cultivating faith—prayer, Scripture, obedience—has eternal dividends.
4. God’s faithfulness never fails (2 Timothy 2:11–13)
“This is a faithful saying: For if we died with Him, we shall also live with Him… If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.”
Our faith may falter, but God’s promises don’t. His character is unshakable.
Why it matters for you: Rest in God’s faithfulness, especially when yours feels weak. He holds you fast.
5. Believers must live out good works (Titus 3:8)
“This is a faithful saying… that those who have believed in God should be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable to men.”
Faith and works aren’t enemies. True faith produces a life of service, kindness, and good works that bless others.
Why it matters for you: Your salvation is by grace, but your life should shine with fruit that glorifies God and helps people.

Each “faithful saying” is a spotlight on truth that never fades: Christ saves sinners, godliness pays, God is faithful, godly leadership aspiration is noble, and good works matter.
