Dear doubting soul, you have often said, “I’m afraid I’ll never make it to heaven.” Do not be afraid. Every one of God’s people will enter there.
I am reminded of the words of a dying believer who said, “I’m not afraid to go home. I’ve already sent everything ahead of me. God’s finger is on the latch of my door, and I am ready for Him to come in.” When someone asked him, “Aren’t you afraid that you might somehow miss your inheritance?” he replied, “No. There is one crown in heaven that even the angel Gabriel could not wear—it fits only my head. There is one throne in heaven that the apostle Paul himself could not sit on—it was made for me, and I will sit there.”
Christian, what a joyful truth this is! Your inheritance is secure. “There remains therefore a rest for the people of God.” But you may ask, “Can I still lose it?” No. It cannot be taken away. If you are truly a child of God, you will not forfeit it. It is yours just as surely as if you were already there.
Come with me, believer. Let us stand on the heights of Nebo and look out over the Promised Land. Do you see that narrow river of death shining in the light? And beyond it, do you see the towers of the eternal city? Do you notice the beautiful land and its joyful inhabitants? Know this: if you could cross over right now, you would see written on one of the many dwellings, “Reserved for this one alone—kept for him. He will dwell with God forever.”
You who struggle with doubt—look again at this glorious inheritance. It belongs to you. If you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, if you have turned from sin, if your heart has been made new, then you are one of the Lord’s people. There is a place prepared for you, a crown laid up specifically for you, a harp set aside just for you. No one else can take your portion. It is kept for you in heaven, and you will receive it soon. There will be no empty thrones in glory when all God’s chosen people are finally gathered home.
