The members of Christ’s Church ought to be a praying people—always seeking the anointing of the Holy One to rest upon their hearts, longing for the kingdom of Christ to advance, and for His will to be done on earth as it is in heaven. Yet there are seasons when God seems to show special favor to Zion. Such moments should be recognized as “the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees.”
At such times, we should pray more earnestly than usual and press more firmly at the throne of grace. Action must then be swift and determined. The tide is rising—now is the moment to row with strength toward the shore. Oh, for Pentecostal outpourings matched with Pentecostal effort!
Christian, there are also moments in your own life when you hear “the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees.” There are seasons when prayer comes easily, when the Spirit fills you with joy and gladness, when Scripture opens with clarity, when promises are applied directly to your heart. You walk in the light of God’s presence, enjoy greater freedom in devotion, and experience deeper communion with Christ than before.
These seasons are not for idleness. When you hear the sound of God moving, this is the time to act. This is the moment to break free from sinful habits, while the Holy Spirit is strengthening you in your weakness. Raise your sail—yet remember the truth you often sing:
“I can only spread the sail;
Thou—Thou—must breathe the favorable wind.”
Be sure the sail is raised. Do not miss the wind of God through lack of preparation. Ask the Lord for grace so that increased faith may lead to greater diligence, greater freedom in prayer to deeper persistence at the throne, and closer fellowship with Christ to a holier daily walk.
