When David asked the Lord for guidance, he had just won a great victory over the Philistines. They had come against him in overwhelming numbers, but with God’s help, David routed them with ease. Yet when the Philistines returned a second time, David did not rush into battle. He did not assume that past success guaranteed future victory.
He could easily have said what many are tempted to say: “I won before; I will win again. Why should I delay to seek the Lord?” But David did not reason that way. Having won one battle by the Lord’s strength, he refused to fight another without the Lord’s direction. He stopped and asked, “Shall I go up against them?” and he waited until God gave the sign.
Learn from David: take no step without God. Christian, if you want to know the path of duty, let God be your compass. If you want to navigate stormy seas, place the steering of your life into the hands of the Almighty. Many disasters would be avoided if we allowed our Father to take the helm. Many hidden dangers would be escaped if we submitted our choices to His sovereign will.
One Puritan wisely said, “Whenever a Christian plans for himself, he is likely to cut his own fingers.” Another wrote, “He who runs ahead of God’s providence is on a fool’s errand.” Both statements ring true. We must watch for God’s providence leading the way—and if it waits, we must wait with it. Those who rush ahead of God often find themselves wishing they could turn back.
God has promised, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go.” Let us, then, bring every confusion and decision to Him and sincerely pray, “Lord, what do You want me to do?” Do not leave your quiet place today without first inquiring of the Lord.
