In our Christian journey, it is usually best to keep our eyes looking ahead. The crown lies before us, and the goal is always onward. Whether we are seeking hope, joy, comfort, or renewed love for God, the future must remain the great focus of faith. When we look ahead by faith, we see sin finally driven out, the body of sin and death destroyed, the soul made perfect and fully prepared to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light.
Looking still further, the believer’s enlightened eyes can see the river of death already crossed—the dark stream safely passed—and the hills of light reached, where the heavenly city stands. He sees himself entering through the pearly gates, welcomed as more than a conqueror, crowned by Christ’s own hand, embraced by Jesus, glorified with Him, and seated with Him on His throne—just as Christ overcame and sat down with the Father on His throne.
This vision of what lies ahead is enough to lift the shadows of the past and soften the burdens of the present. The joy of heaven will more than repay the sorrows of earth. Be still, my doubts. Death is only a narrow river, and you will soon cross it. Time is short; eternity is endless. Death is brief; immortality has no end. Even now, it seems as though I taste the rich grapes of Eshcol and drink from the well just inside the gate. The journey is so very short. Soon, I will be home.
When the world tears at my heart
With its fiercest storms of care,
My joyful thoughts rise heavenward
And find refuge from despair.
Faith’s bright vision will sustain me
Till my pilgrimage is done;
Though fears and troubles press me hard,
I shall reach my home at last.
