If none of God’s people were poor or afflicted, we would never know the full comfort of His grace. When we see the wanderer with no place to rest, yet still saying, “I will trust in the Lord,” or the pauper surviving on bread and water, yet rejoicing in Jesus, or the grieving widow overwhelmed with sorrow, yet holding fast to Christ—what honor this brings to the gospel! God’s grace shines brightest in the poverty and trials of His people.
Believers endure discouragements because they trust that “all things work together for good,” and that even apparent evils will ultimately bring real blessings. They know that God will either deliver them quickly or sustain them as long as He chooses to keep them in the trial. This patient endurance proves the power of divine grace.
Think of a lighthouse at sea: on a calm night, you cannot tell if it is strong. But when the storm rages, then you see whether it stands firm. So it is with the Spirit’s work. Without storms, we would not know its strength. The masterworks of God are those men and women who remain steadfast in the midst of difficulties—unshaken, immovable—
“Calm amid the bewildering cry,
Confident of victory.”
Anyone who desires to glorify God must expect many trials. No one can be truly great in the Lord’s sight without many conflicts. So if your path is filled with trials, rejoice! You will better display the all-sufficient grace of God. As for the thought that His grace might fail you—banish it completely. The God who has been sufficient until now can be trusted to the very end.
